Lace – Selvedge Magazine 82

Lace

Published on

Lace is one of our most contradictory materials. At once demure and erotic, cheap and sophisticated, fragile and strong, it constantly returns to the forefront of fashion. With the spectacle of the Royal Wedding nearing, we begin this issue with Vera Wang’s bridal wear and end in a mix of eye-opening places. Our contributors excavate lace history in Normandy, Nottingham and Devon, trace the motives of the Luddites, examine the politics of the veil, explore lace’s role in gender fluidity and look to our cities to take in its latest influence on contemporary architecture.
